2011 TESTING

Dear Home-Schooling Family:

We will be administering the California Achievement Test CAT 5 Survey in a group setting at the locations listed here. Annual assessments are required for home-school students ages 8-18 who are not enrolled in state approved private school extension program. Each testing session begins at 9.30am, is over by 12.00pm and takes two mornings to complete.

ABOUT THE CAT TEST:

The two-day session minimizes testing fatigue and creates a more conducive environment for accurate results.

Each CAT 5 test will be hand-scored by the parent, so that the results can be more carefully analyzed to determine specific learning gaps.

We will “coach” each parent through the scoring and analysis process for the CAT 5 test. Parents will take home the results on the afternoon of the second day, after they have completed the scoring. If the parent cannot assist with the scoring and analysis, there will be an additional charge per student.

If your child has considerable difficulty with a traditional testing environment, or is not reading fluently at a 2nd grade level, you may want to consider using a non-test assessment approach. We may be able to refer you for this.

In order to be sure we have a sufficient number of tests for each level, please mail the CAT Reservation Form (be sure to indicate the appropriate level of tests), postmarked two weeks before your first testing date for the location you have chosen. If postmarked after the deadline for early registration, there will be an additional $5. Fee. To guarantee a place for your child, return the reservation form with your payment as soon as possible.

CALIFORNIA ACHIEVEMENT TEST
CAT 5 Survey
12 Grade 1.6 – 3.2
13 Grade 2.6 – 4.2
14 Grade 3.6 – 5.2
15 Grade 4.6 – 6.2
16 Grade 5.6 – 7.2
17 Grade 6.6 – 8.2
18 Grade 7.6 – 9.2
19 Grade 8.6 – 10.2
20 Grade 9.6 – 11.2
21/22 Grade 10.6 – 12.9

Note: The CAT requires adequate reading skills. For instance, at level 13, the student should be READING very comfortably AT A SECOND GRADE LEVEL. Level 13 indicates grade 2.6-4.2 and meets the needs of many eight and nine year old students. If your child has not mastered his or her reading skills yet or has difficulty with a traditional testing environment, the level 13 test will be a total frustration and will not show his true academic progress. In choosing the appropriate test level, realize test levels overlap somewhat. If your child has performed at an average level and is not overly stressed by testing, the test that will give the most information (as to new areas to work on for next year) is the higher level. If, however, your child is highly stressed by testing and/or somewhat behind in academics, a lower level is recommended or you may wish using a non-test assessment approach.

PARENT HELP WITH PROCTORING

Parents are welcome and needed to help as proctors for the 2nd and 3rd graders during testing. Please indicate on your registration form the day or days you would be available to help. Proctor tips and “how to’s” will be available at the testing site. Please arrive 20 minutes early to prepare for this most important position. Thank you ahead of time for all of your help. Proctors will be reimbursed the cost of one student’s test registration.

Refunds are possible for cancellations given one week prior to the first day of testing.

Please allow 15 days for the computer printout of the test. . .
